Salento is a peninsula located at the south-eastern Italy, in area commonly called the “heel of Italy”. The charm of this small sub-region immediately wins the tourists. The coast lines and the sea are certainly among the most beautiful in Italy. Coasts alternates, in fact, impressive cliffs to long beaches (maps) of extra fine white sand. This is why a part of Salento’s coast is romantically called “Maldives”.
The must for the “New comer” in Salento is to visit Otranto, Gallipoli and Santa Maria di Leuca. Otranto is a small-fortified town perched on the Adriatic coast, with greek origin; gorgeous the Aragonese castle that dominates the city. Do not miss the cathedral and its beautiful mosaic floor, which is recognized as one of the most important Italian medieval works. Located on the opposite side, on the Ionian Sea, is Gallipoli, a lovely little town with the singular historical center built in a peculiar “pan shape” and characterized by a maze of narrow streets. Last but not least, the end, or beginning, of Italy: Santa Maria di Leuca, built on the very tip of the peninsula, where the Ionian and the Adriatic Sea join.
Equally interesting for visitors are the Salento inland cities with baroque town centers, identified by white and warm local stone. Among these must-see: Nardò, Copertino, Galatina, Ugento, Tricase, and Coriglianod’Otranto.
